Undergraduate Study in Linguistics
The Minor in Linguistics
The minor in linguistics is designed to provide students in Computer Science,
Education, Foreign Languages, Psychology, and other departments with a basic
grounding in the scientific study of human language. The minor requires 18
credits, distributed as follows:
- LING 101 Introduction to Linguistics

Substitutions for the above courses may be made with the approval of the
Undergraduate Studies Committee of the Department of Linguistics.
A grade of "C" or better is required in all courses.
The Minor in Cognitive Science
Cognitive Science studies the computational and
representational structure of the mind by combining linguistics, philosophy,
computer science (especially artificial intelligence), and psychology.
Courses for the minor in cognitive science focus on three areas:
- broad foundational issues in linguistics, psychology, and computing;
- narrower issues in mental representation, computation, theoretical linguistics, and
epistemology;
- problems in cognition, data processing, and language and
formal representation that are related to students' particular interests.
The minor is administered through the Dept. of Linguistics. It requires 18
credits, distributed as follows (most of these courses have prerequisites, as
listed):
- All the following:
- CIS 105 General Computer Science
or CIS 180 Introduction to Computer Science I (prereq: CIS 105 or programming experience)
- LIN 101 Introduction to Linguistics
- PSY 201 General Psychology
- One of the following:
- CIS 480 Computers and the Mind
- LIN 409 Syntax I (prereq: LIN 101)
- LIN 491 Semantics (prereq: LIN 101)
- PSY 340 Cognition (prereq: PSY 201)
- Two of the following:
- CIS 220 Data Structures (prereq: CIS 181)
- CIS 681 Artificial Intelligence (prereq: CIS 220 & 310)
- EDS 462 Language Acquisition
