The Minor in Linguistics

The minor in linguistics is designed to provide students in Computer Science, Education, Foreign Languages, Psychology, and other departments with a basic grounding in the scientific study of human language. The minor requires 18 credits, distributed as follows:

  1. LING 101 Introduction to Linguistics
  2. One of the following:
  3. Any four additional LING courses, two of which must be at the 300-level or above.

Substitutions for the above courses may be made with the approval of the Undergraduate Studies Committee of the Department of Linguistics.

A grade of "C" or better is required in all courses.


The Minor in Cognitive Science

Cognitive Science studies the computational and representational structure of the mind by combining linguistics, philosophy, computer science (especially artificial intelligence), and psychology. Courses for the minor in cognitive science focus on three areas:

  1. broad foundational issues in linguistics, psychology, and computing;
  2. narrower issues in mental representation, computation, theoretical linguistics, and epistemology;
  3. problems in cognition, data processing, and language and formal representation that are related to students' particular interests.

The minor is administered through the Dept. of Linguistics. It requires 18 credits, distributed as follows (most of these courses have prerequisites, as listed):

NOTE: The Cognitive Science Minor is currently undergoing revisions. LING 270 Intro. to Cognitive Science currently is not listed as a required course but is strongly recommended.
